Algo were awarded the Contract to construct a new Whisky Distillery and External Bunded Tank Area, Whisky Storage Warehouse and Staff Welfare Facility at Laggan Bay, on the Isle of Islay.
Working with a Novated Design Team of Architects, Structural and Civil Engineers, M&E Consultants and Process Equipment Engineers – Algo were responsible for the delivery of the development on time and on budget.
The project included ground and civils works which involved extensive ground regulation and preparation to create the construction platforms for the new buildings, roadways and SUDs drainage.
The Distillery and Warehouse buildings were steel portal frames with insulated roof and wall cladding, in-situ concrete floor slabs, fire rated compartment walls, stairs, passenger lift and included all M&E Installations. There are also large areas of Curtain Walling in the Distillery Building to enhance the aesthetics of the building and provide views of the Stills and Tanks within the building.
The Distillery Building was a 2-storey structure with varying floor levels to accommodate the Stills and Tanks that were installed within the building, and also houses a large Boiler Room, Welfare Facilities and Control Room. The Distillery will form part of visitor tours, so additional safety zones and pedestrian walkways were incorporated to allow safe access for visitors around the facility while providing viewing areas of the day-to-day processes.The Warehouse Building is a single storey, 990m² facility which will primarily house whisky casks for maturation. There is also a small fire protected Operator’s Control Room which will be used to log and monitor the stock within the warehouse.The Staff Welfare Facility is the primary hub of the site for all staff. The building includes Offices, Meeting Room, Welfare Facilities and Staff Canteen along with a Workshop and covered Forklift Charging Area. The structure is a mono-pitch design with insulated roof panels and architectural wall panels, aluminium windows and steel doors, internal joinery fit-out, floor coverings, fixtures and fittings and all M&E installations to complete.
The project duration was 20 months with the Distillery officially opening and filling its first cask on 2nd April 2026.
